Center for the Homeless

Campus Masterplan and Community Spaces

Our 2012 masterplan for South Bend’s Center for the Homeless (CFH) is the culmination of a community reaching outward to help a group in need and in the meantime revitalize a long-neglected segment of fabric along the City’s southern gateway. In the two years since the dedication of the Robert L. Miller Veteran’s Center (RLMVC), our efforts have extended beyond the walls of the RLMVC, to include a masterplan to connect the RLMVC with the CFH Main Campus: the primary homeless shelter for non-military men, women, and children, a new recreation court and playground, Staff Parking, and adjacent Community Garden. These new spaces provide essential exercise and recreation areas for the many age groups served by our client’s organization, including the Miller’s Vets Military Color Guard.

Main Campus Renovation

Our work for the Center for the Homeless continued in 2013 when we were asked by the Center’s Director and Executive Board to redesign the Center’s Main Campus residential facility. The 40,000 SF interior renovation involved critical evaluation of the existing residential building, the configuration of which limits the Center in its capacity to serve its guests and meet its mission. Design goals for the extensive renovation included a significant shift in the Center’s operating mission to one aimed at ensuring greater quality of care and quality of life for its guests. This involved re-thinking the number, arrangement, and location of all guest accommodations and support services, including a greater focus on women and families.
