Service to Community

Because of my particular areas of expertise, I have been called to serve in various capacities on both public and private boards, in my professional and broader communities. In 2015, I was appointed by the Mayor of the City of South Bend to the 4-member Board of Parks Commissioners, a role which includes oversight of the 1,300-acre City park system and $15M of funded development over the next two years. In 2016, I became the board-elected Vice President of the Commission. From 2002-2009, I was a Fellow of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, a national organization that promotes the practice and appreciation of classical architecture, urbanism, and art. In that capacity, I served on the Board of Directors as the Representative to the Fellows (as President of Fellows, 2005-2006) and on the Governance, Academic Programs, and Exhibits & Events Committees. Service to my Community has also taken the form of pro-bono design services for important community organizations and special consulting to the City.

In 2013 and 2014, I organized two unique education and outreach experiences to engage Notre Dame and my architecture students in the broader community. Teamwork and Timber 2013 brought together sophomore and fifth-year architecture students with elementary school students from Madison Primary Academy, an inner-city South Bend school, to learn about traditional timber framing. In 2014, I organized a Live-Build Event around the construction of the Morrison Education and Outreach Pavilion at ND-LEEF that included another 4th grade class from Madison Primary Academy, along with Notre Dame undergraduate and graduate students, and members of the community (see ND-LEEF Studio Design project, as well as ND-LEEF Research).

I am a member of the Building Technology Educators Society (BTES), an organization of architectural educators focused on promoting and publishing the best pedagogic practices, relevant research, scholarship, and other creative activity related to building technology. In 2012, I was elected to the Board of Executive Directors for a three-year term by the BTES membership. I have served as a referee for technical papers, journal articles, and book chapters, including submissions to the Journal of Energy and Buildings and as a panelist for the National Science Foundation.
